Watertown Soccer Club – Fact Sheet

What is the difference between Park and Rec. Soccer and the Watertown Soccer Club (WSC)?
Soccer through the Watertown Park and Rec. is a program designed to initiate young players (kindergarten thru 4th grade) to the sport of soccer. The importance of competition at the earliest ages is minimized while having fun is stressed in an effort to encourage player development. The WSC program is a continuation of the positive exposure the young player has begun through the Park and Rec. WSC players are between the ages of 10 years old (5th grade) through high school. The importance of competition is increased with the introduction of teams from outside the Watertown area. Technical and tactical skill development is progressive.
What can my child gain by being part of the WSC?
Your child will learn to grow physically, emotionally and mentally thru the sport of soccer. Player’s skill development is still the main focus, but competition starts to enter the equation.
Affiliations
The WSC is part of the Madison Area Youth Soccer Association (MAYSA) www.maysa.org. The WSC is a part of state, national and international soccer organizations.
Skill Level
Teams are divided into Recreation (A/B) and Classic (A/B). Recreational teams are often a good 1st step for players coming out of the Park and Rec. program. Classic soccer is meant for players who love playing soccer and are willing to spend more time perfecting their skills.
How many kids play on the field at each time?
As with the Park and Rec. program style of formatting, under-age eleven (U11) and under-age twelve (U12) boys and girls play on a reduced size field with eight players on the field at a time. Players over the age of 12 (U13 and beyond) play full-sided soccer (11 vs. 11) on a regulation-sized field.
How often does a team practice?
It is dependent on the coach. Most teams practice twice a week for an hour to an hour and a half.
How many games does each team play?
Teams play 8 games in the fall and 8 in the spring. Half are home and half away.
When and where are games played?
Home games are played at Brandt Quirk Park and away games are played in the Madison area. Whenever possible MAYSA will divide the Madison area into regions (North, South, East, and West) to minimize travel. The majority of time games are played on either Saturday or Sundays.
Cost
Player registration is $110 per year + $40 for a uniform. Discounts are given to families with multiple players in the WSC and to those who qualify for the reduced school lunch program.
Uniforms
Uniforms include a home blue jersey, white alternative, shorts, and socks. Uniforms are purchased every other year or on an as need basis.
Coaches
As with most community soccer clubs the coaches for the WSC are volunteers. Coaches must obtain an E License through the Wisconsin Youth Soccer Association (WYSA) www.wiyouthsoccer.com. The E License covers the elementary principles of coaching soccer. Some coaches attain higher designations.
When can you sign up for participation in the Watertown Soccer Club?
The WSC usually holds registration around Memorial Day. Registration can be done at other times by contacting the club register, Dawn Learned at 920-261-3943.
