What is the difference between Park and Recreation Soccer and the Watertown Soccer Club (WSC)?

Soccer through Watertown Park & Rec is a program designed to initiate young players to the sport of soccer.  The importance of competition at the earliest ages is minimized while having fun is stressed in an effort to encourage player participation.

The WSC program is a continuation of the positive exposure the young player has begun through Park & Rec at early ages. The WSC has started offering placement to players as young at 7 years old so players have an alternative option to Park & Rec if they are more serious about the sport and want to develop further as players. WSC players are between the ages of 7 years old through high school.  The importance of tactical skill development is progressive over the seasons and from year to year.  

What can my child gain by being part of WSC?

The WSC strives to build a solid foundation for individual player development with a focus on technique, fitness, psychology and tactics, while also teaching the importance of teamwork, good sportsmanship, and a love for the game. Players will learn valuable life skills - the importance of commitment, perseverance, discipline, fairness, overcoming adversity, and dedication to continual improvement - all of which will make them winners both on and off the soccer field!

How often does a team practice?

It is dependent on the coaching staff.  Teams practice at least twice a week for an hour and a half to two hours.  The older teams may practice more often during the week.  Practice times and days are decided by the coach.  

How many games does each team play?

Most teams play 8 games in the fall and 8 in the spring. Usually half of the games are home at Brandt Quirk Park and half of them are away. The number of games a team plays is decided by the league itself (MAYSA). This is based on the number of teams in the current tier within the league. Some club teams play in tournaments at the coach’s discretion which would result in more games for those teams.  

When and where are games played?

Home games are played at Brandt Quirk Park Soccer Complex and away games are played in the Madison area. The majority of the time games are played on either Saturday or Sunday.  

Cost

Player registration is $475 per year, which includes both the fall and spring seasons. Tournament fees, if your team participates, are extra and not included in registration fees. Uniforms

Uniforms are included in your registration fee (replaced on a two year rotation). Additional warm-ups, duffel bags and spirit wear are sold several times throughout the year, but are not required.

Coaches

As with most community soccer clubs, the coaches for the WSC are considered volunteers. They do receive a player registration fee back as a small token of appreciation for their endless amount of hours they put into coaching. Coaches must obtain a license through the Wisconsin Youth Soccer Association (WYSA). The license covers principles of coaching soccer, first aid, and youth nutrition. Some coaches obtain higher level licensing and go to coaching clinics. All WSC coaches must pass a Safesport program which includes background checks through Players Health Protect.

When can I sign up for participation in the Watertown Soccer Club?

WSC registration is held each year in May.  Registrations may be accepted all year long if roster spots are available.
